Just be you.

It looks like you guys really enjoyed reading some of my favorite ladies own it while I was enjoying beautiful BermudaI really LOVE reading others' posts because everyone goes in a different direction creatively so it's fun to see each take on how to own it.  My other favorite reason is that you can find other people that do those same crazy things you do!

In case you missed it...
Jenn from Going the Distance
and I owned it too.

And today, I've got another great lady owning it too!
Welcome, Erika from a little bit of everything
I didn't want to skip out on the owning it too so my "vacation week owning it's" are at the bottom.

Let's get started...
{1} Link back to The New Mrs. and/or share the graphic
{2} Link your post at the bottom of this post
{3} Enjoy reading everyone else own it, confess it and have fun!

******************************
I wasn't planning on having a guest today but then I found the Queen of owning it, Erika because she featured one of my favorite bloggers, Elise in, you guessed it, her owning it series... how fun!  I then had a couple of you tell me I'd enjoy her "Owning it" series so I just knew I had to invite her over for the linkup today.  Since I switched my blog from private to public I've been joining Erika and her friends in their Friday Favorites series (join in tomorrow!) and now can't wait to continue reading her blog daily... you should too because she is so sweet, would be a blast to hang out with and has the most precious family!

Hey Everyone!!  I'm Erika and I blog over at A Little Bit of Everything.  I'm a Jesus-loving wife, mama to three, blogger, and Rodan + Fields' consultant.  I love all things girly and am not afraid to claim my crazy!  Christina found my blog last week and discovered I have an "Owning It" series over in my neck of the blog-world too (Every month I ask a fellow blogger to guest post and share her crazy).  She asked me to come and participate in her series.  There was absolutely NO way I was saying, "No" to that!  I love owning my crazy and sharing it with others. I'm so happy to be here with you today!  Christina...thank you for having me!!

*I have an issue with doing things in order.  It bothers me to flip through a recipe book and make a recipe on page thirty-three.  Even if page thirty-three looks SO delicious, I'd prefer to start at the beginning and work my way to the end.  Remember that movie where the girl cooks her way through Julia Child's cookbook??  I can relate!  haha!  I remember being young and not allowing myself to color my favorite picture in the coloring book.  I always worked my way through it.  I like to start at the beginning and work my way to the end!

*When my husband is out of town and I get the kids to bed, I often reward myself with food.  It could be strawberries and Nutella, a little bowl of cereal, or a brownie.  But a big majority of the time, this is the way I say, "Way to go, girl!".  Not sure what is better....doing some late night online shopping or eating dessert.  Tab would say, "Eat up!".  :)

*This one is super strange, but I'm owning it!!  ha!  If you ask me how to spell something, I visualize how I would type it.  Does that make sense??  I imagine typing the word and then it's easier for me to spell something out loud.  I know.  Super cray-cray.

*On that same note when I was in junior high a girlfriend asked me how to spell, "crap". Please excuse that language, Grandma!  But that's the word she wanted me to spell.  For some strange reason, I thought it was spelled C-R-A-P-H.  You know how the D-word has an extra random letter at the end that has no phonemic significance?  Well, I thought for some weird reason that crap (or craph) was the same way.  hahaha!!  Needless to say, she spelled it like I told her and her boyfriend laughed and laughed at her.  Oops!  To this day, I know that it's spelled, "C-R-A-P", but if you ask me how to spell it I'll want to put an "H" on the end.

*I'm from a super small country town in Missouri.  My graduating senior class had twelve people.  Yes, twelve.  Eight girls and four boys.  On the seniors' last day, we wanted to go out with a bang.  It was the country after all.  We decided to all drive four-wheelers, three-wheelers, whatever you had to school that day instead of a car.  We all met up before driving into school so if someone didn't have something to drive we all shared.  I drove our four-wheeler, but my very favorite part about it was one of my classmates drove his tractor.  I'm one hundred percent happy I live in the city now, but at times my country roots definitely shine through.  I think back on that last day of school and smile!

*In high school, I would have used the word "athletic" to describe myself.  I'm not even kidding.  But I can't use it anymore.  From fifth grade to graduation I played volleyball.  I played for my school, on club teams, and went to camps each summer.  I was all in and pretty good.  I made All-District...that makes me sound legit, right?  haha!!  So my first year of teaching third grade the school where I taught has a huge kickball tournament the last week of school.  The classes all play each other and then the winners play each other and eventually the number one student team plays the teachers.  That is a BIG game with an announcer, parents watching, and the entire school in attendance.  I was only twenty-two years old I should have been the star on the kickball team, right?  So wrong!  First off...when it was my turn to kick I completely missed the ball.  My leg went right over the top!  Then when I was in the field....the ball went right through my legs.  Needless to say, I would NEVER use the word "athletic" to describe myself again.

*I'm not an pet person.  Growing up we had a couple random dogs and cats, but none that ever really became a part of the family.  Living out in the country, they were all outside pets.  But my son, Nixon, is obsessed with dogs and has been since he could talk!  I'm mentally preparing myself for getting him a dog when he's seven.  I think I told him that when he was three because it seemed SO FAR AWAY.  Well, he just turned five!!  EEK!!

*I'm a good mix of crazy disorganized and organized.  I lose my debit card ALL THE TIME!  It drives my husband crazy!  But if you asked me where Ebby Lee's blue polka dot dress was or Nixon's baseball belt...I could tell you EXACTLY where they are.

*The phrase "we should go dancing" has never left my mouth.  (I totally copied this from a friend!)  I think the only time dancing is fun is at a wedding when your doing ridiculous things like the Hokey Pokey and the Chicken Dance.

Christina, thank you SO much for having me!!!

Erika, Thank YOU so much for joining in on the own it fun today! I loved getting to know a little bit more about you!  Now that I've read all your Owning it & Claiming the crazy posts, I'm wondering why I haven't read your blog on a daily basis sooner?!   Your owning it series is fabulous and everyone must check it out!  What a perfect fit for a guest post today - don't you think!?

******************************

It's tough to go after Erika but I want to be part of the fun too. These posts seem to be a real favorite all over blog land and I love having girls share their posts - let's face it, they are SO fun to read and it helps connect the blog community and find new friends!

Today I bring you a couple "vacation week" own it's...

1 + Remember when Karly & I both owned calling our mom's too often (which really, never!) well I did it again! You know, vacationing with my husband in bright & sunny Bermuda and I just have to call my mom to say hey in the morning.  I think she even thought I was a little crazy when I started off with my normal, "what are you doing" and she said well it's 7am here.  On a Saturday so I'm just waking up.  Ooops - forgot about that time difference and she probably forgot I'd keep up with my constant need to be in touch.

2 + I may or may not have gotten teary eyed about saying goodbye to Stella and I will own the heck out of that! She's my little baby and my sidekick - I mean, I even pack her up and bring her to the office! Derek gave a toast at dinner one night and I followed it up with "... and cheers also to Stella." Cue the crazy look I got.  Anyway, I may or may not have gotten a little teary eyed picking her back up from the puppy resort.

3 +  I can't stand the fact that we didn't unpack until Tuesday night.  I had high hopes of doing it the night we got back but those went right out the window.  It was just completely eating at me that our clothes/everything were just sitting in the suitcases.  Also that the clutter that the suitcases were causing on our bedroom floor.  Which we have a fairly large sized bedroom so by no means were they in the way.  AT ALL.  Just bothering me that they were there, full of dirty clothes, and sitting.

******************************

 Ok, your turn! Link up below - I can't wait to read them all.  If you missed out today, the linkup runs through the weekend so join in or come back the last Thursday (5/28) of next month!

Make sure to pop on over to Erika's blog and say hello! Seriously, you'll lover her!

Spring Entertaining

The sun is out and will be ALL week long.
We're setting up our new deck furniture and our grill this weekend.
When you build a new house and it's finished at the end of summer, the following spring/summer is extra exciting.  We have a lot of outdoor areas to enjoy at the new house and I've been waiting (what feel's like forever) to use them... that time is finally now.

We're planning all our meals for this weekend to be made n the grill and outside on the deck.
Dining alfresco is my favorite.  It's pretty safe to say we'll be doing it quite a bit between now and the fall.
Entertaining is another favorite but entertaining this time of the year - very favorite.
There's so many big and little reasons to throw together a little get-together this time of the year and I hope to have our deck well broken in before the real start of summer even hits.

In our house we don't need a huge reason to throw a gathering - just because the weather is gorgeous, a simple happy hour, a plain old fashion BBQ are some of my favorite reasons.
The "just because" days end up being the most fun.

The Kentucky Derby and other horse races,
when the boys get home from a day on the golf course,
Cinco de Mayo,
Mother's Day/Father's Day,
Of course, Memorial Day.
All great reasons to entertain outdoors.

A couple of my favorite entertaining tips for the spring…

{Fake Plates. Real Silverware. Acrylic Glasses}
If were having over more than about five or so guests I'd much rather put out the nice chinet plates (not the cheap flimsy ones but the sturdy, you can fill your plate to the brim ones) because I'd rather someone not drop one of my nice dishes out on the deck AND I'd also rather not be spending a long time on clean up.  I want to enjoy with everyone too!

While I like to go "fake" on the plates, I like to go real on the silverware.  There's nothing worse than having a little plastic knife that will barely cut your food.  When we registered I made sure to get extra silverware for entertaining.  It's also easy to quickly throw right in the dishwasher.

Kind of like the plates - if it's a smaller gathering, I'll take my nice wine glass right on out to the patio.  But if it's more people (usually meaning more fun, more drinks) I grab out my acrylic wine/drinking glasses (which I may add, are equally as cute - having a nice acrylic set is essential) and/or some plain, pretty plastic cups.  I'm not talking a huge red solo cup - just those little dainty clear plastic ones.
{Serve with Style}
I might not use real plates and real glasses but I'm surely going to place out my serveware - some melamine and some real.  I believe a pretty table is a happy table - in fact, I have some serve ware just for summer evenings because let's face it, it's cute and hard to say no to.  I like my table to look like it could be in Martha Stewart Living not just like I threw some items out last minute - BUT that works JUST as well.  I just find joy in the "setup" factor.
{Appetizers are Everything}
I've said it before but we are HUGE into appys.  They are fun.  There's a huge variety.  Some nights, they are all you need.  When entertaining I like to try to have a minimum (usually much more) of three key appetizers - cheese plate (favorite), a dip, and something else.
Like I said - we usually end up with much more, a very large cheese plate and possibly multiple dips (who doesn't like to dip? this girl could live off dips)
{Summer Cocktails}
There's nothing better than having a pretty fruity drink in hand.  It's my favorite time of the year to mix up my own concoctions - the rest of the months it's usually wine.  It's also great to have a variety - either with a drink cart (so many cute outdoor options) or a drink bucket - We have a fairly large bar area in our basement so sometimes we'll probably just leave this aspect in the house instead of lugging everything out.

Also key...
+Fruit infused water
+A drink pitcher of whatever you want, I just like the appeal of the pitcher (lemonade, a fruit juice, the water I mentioned, the signature drink, margarita)
+Ice ice baby.  If the temperature outside is warm, the temperature of my drink needs to be very cold.  Having ice buckets out is very key.
one // two // three
{Keep the Main Course Easy}
Short and simple - fire up the grill or get a sandwich tray are my favorite options.
The grill being the best because well let's face it - less work for me :) the hubby is the grill master.  Plus what I said before about wanting to enjoy the hosting - the grill is outside.  Nobody is stuck in the kitchen. Have a combination of any/all salads/pasta salads/potato salad/coleslaw/etc as your sides and your good to go (most of these you can usually prep early in the day)
{Don't Skimp on Dessert}
Don't leave out the best part - you always have to have something sweet.
Whether as easy as putting out ice cream and toppings to make a sundae bar,
the ingredients for smores,
a pie or cake you can make early in the day,
definitely have something out to indulge that sweet tooth!
{Ambiance}
I don't need a ton of decorations - well if it's something like Fourth of July or a theme party, maybe sometimes I do ;) but I definitely like to set the scene.
Something as simple as some nice bright placemats and plenty of fresh flowers.
Lighting cannot be forgotten - candles, lanterns, etc.  When the sun goes down, it's still nice to enjoy the outdoors - just not completely in the dark.

Okay, now it's your turn! What are your favorite spring hosting tips?
Appetizers/meals/desserts that are your go-to's for serving guests?

Don't forget to link up tomorrow and share those Own It posts.

Home, again

We got home last night from a fabulous long weekend in Bermuda.
What an  a m a z i n g  island.  We were in love upon landing.

The weather was fantastic - 75 and sunny is my kind of beach weather.
The water was beautifully blue and the rest of the island strikingly green with bright colors everywhere you looked.

A couple quick photos of our travels below with a full recap and a bunch of photos to come next week!
Only an hour time difference which didn't hit us at all… until last night.  Bed time came VERY early and the suitcases are still laying on the floor completely packed.

This weather is easing the pain of being home - it looks like a beautiful week ahead.  My mom's cooking us dinner so I don't have to go to the grocery store (huge win!), I'll be busy giving extra attention to one golden pup and we'll have the typical "day after vacation" day today and get back into the swing of things.

Lots of thanks again to Jenn, Karly & Amanda for keeping the blog going while I was away.
You can read them own it herehere and here
Don't forget to own it yourself and linkup on Thursday!

Own It: Featuring Amanda from As the Wine Cork Turns

Vacation's over - sort of! We've got a little time left here and later today we're headed home.  I can't wait to see our little Stella.  I may or may not have cried a little when we had to leave her at the puppy resort. Time to get back to reality.
Today I've got the third lady taking over while I'm away - Amanda. If it wasn't for the distance, we would for sure have some fun hangouts - I mean just look at her blog title… right up my alley!  I love following along with her posts because she's basically doing right now exactly what I was doing last year at this time because she's getting married one week before our one year anniversary!

hi! i'm amanda i blog over at as the wine cork turns where you will find me talking about all things wedding, wine, what i'm eating, and what i did for the weekend. that was a lot of w's. i guess i have a thing for w's because my new last name will be walker on august 29 of this year. anyway, i love christina's new idea of the owning it series. so here are 5 things that i'm confessing and just owning lately.

- i confess that i'm straight up 100% into wedding planning mode. maybe even a little too much. i just recently designed our wedding invites and posted about it on instagram (follow me! @agcrute). how many people really care about my sneak peek right? but i do nonetheless, so an instagram post was a must.

- i confess that i should be eating better, drinking less, and working out more. during the weeks, i'm pretty strict with eating healthy. i meal plan. i pack lunches. i do everything i should. but then there's that papa john's app on my phone that yells at me saying buy me! i'm a believer in taking care of yourself or even trying to achieve a goal to look your best for your wedding - but dang it, i refuse to let that come before having fun or indulging every now and then.
- i confess that i've watched sam hunt's take your time video one too many times. haven't seen it yet? peep it here. it definitely took a different direction than i thought it would. maybe that's why i connected to it so much. i don't think i've came out too much on my own blog about being in a past relationship that dealt with some sort of abuse, but i have. along time ago. regardless, this hit home for me. it's something you don't forget. i suggest you check it out.

- i confess that i'm not a perfect blogger. i've talked about this before here, but there are some weeks where i will blog everyday and then there are others when i go a few days without logging in. i enjoy doing this as a hobby, but it's not my whole life.
- i confess that sometimes i wish i lived closer to the city of charlotte. don't get me wrong - every single day i am in love with my house and the crazy progress we've made ever since that post. and i think if someone asked me would i up and move, i can say with certainty that i wouldn't because of the reasons we moved to the location that we did. for future children, for many of the other reasons i don't have to name, i would stay where i am at. but my commute to the city everyday? yes, that gets old. but i'll still own my decision to move there. i'll own it because i own a house!

that about sums it up for my owning it confessions lately. come say hi over at my blog and a big thank you to christina for letting me have fun today!
post signature
Thank you so much, Amanda for entertaining everyone while I finish out my vacation.  I love that you own your wedding planning obsession - but hey, your about four months away, you should be - I definitely was last year!

If you had fun reading Karly, JennAmanda and I own it, join in the fun next Thursday and the last Thursday of each month with your own post!   Own anything, big or little.  Share that "little thing you do."  Have a confession session.  Things from the past week/month or just in general.

Hope your week is off to a fabulous start!

Own It: Featuring Karly from Miss in the Midwest

Day two in Bermuda is underway.  You can follow along on instagram to keep up.  Lots of relaxing, beach time and fun cocktails await us today.
I'm back today with the second lady helping me out while I'm away so read below to see Karly own it.
{To read mine and Jenn's click over in the side bar}
If there were a few less miles separating us, we'd for sure be fast friends with lots of puppy play dates.  Seriously, check out her blog to see how cute sweet Finn is! Karly is quite the fashionista - I'm always finding inspiration in her outfits and day after day we find more and more similarities.

Hi, everybody! I’m Karly, and I blog over at Miss in the Midwest about all things beauty, life and style.

I’m thrilled to be guest posting for Christina today while she is away for the weekend, and I’m especially excited to help get the party started with her new Own It series/linkup! I believe that it’s important that we all remember to be proud of our quirks and unique characteristics that make us individuals in this (sometimes) nutty world. Never be afraid to be YOU, and never, ever apologize for who you are and what you stand for.

I love myself a good to-do list or checklist for every aspect of my life. Even if I’ve already completed a particular task that I didn’t write down, I will still add it to the list and cross it off purely for personal satisfaction.

I’ve been known to listen to full musical productions – think Wicked or Phantom of the Opera - while doing long-distance driving and singing every. single. word of every single song. Oh yeah, I even do imitations of the different character voices.

As much as I’m looking forward to becoming a mommy in the (hopefully) near future, I’m worried that I won’t have as much affection for my human child as I do for my dog, Finley. On the contrary, I also fear for how much love and affection my human child will receive based on how I treat Finn – pet parents hopefully understand me here.

One of my biggest pet peeves is not holding the door for the person behind you when walking into a store, restaurant, etc. I’m that person that sarcastically shouts “THANKS!” to the person in front of me when the slams in my face.

I talk to my mom each and every day – sometimes, multiple times a day – with no exceptions. I even called her once while they were on a cruise ship in the middle of the Caribbean to inform her that Patrick Swayze died. She’s my best friend, and I tell her pretty much everything.

Also on that note, after seven years together with Ryan, including living together beginning in 2011, and two years of marriage, I still at times get homesick and want nothing more than a day with my parents.

I should be a poster child for the term hangry – I even scare myself sometimes. The minute that I’m hungry, a flip basically switches – I either get really quiet and withdrawn OR I get super aggressive and angry, throwing swear words all over the place and yelling for no apparent reason. But, the minute that I get food in my stomach, I’m back to normal.

I am borderline obsessive about Hollywood, pop culture, celebrities – you name it. I watch every red carpet and awards show and talk to the TV like I’m actually there interviewing the celebrities, and I critique all the anchors and correspondents on their questions and sometimes annoying behavior. I figure this will keep me prepared in case I ever get the dream phone call that the E! Network somehow found me and wants me to take over for Guiliana Rancic (or better yet, Maria Menunous. Ew.)

Purging my closet and general household clutter is one of my absolute favorite things to do. Ryan even has a term for this – he calls it my “get sh*t out mode.” It’s a real thing around here, and I am not to be questioned or bothered when I’m trying to clean out the house.

At 26 years old, I definitely envisioned something else for myself, especially career wise. I never thought I’d be the one who is at home all day, still working but also managing the household. But, you know what? I am happy as a clam, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Now it’s your turn! Share something in the comments that you would like to own about yourself, and don’t forget to get your own posts ready for the linkup next week.

Thanks, again to Christina for hosting me today!

Many thanks to Karly for taking over this little blog today while I enjoy another day of vacation. Another reason we'd be fast friends is the homesick thing.  Seriously, I love a gal that can confess being homesick (I mean I had a breakdown just last week over missing home) and love people that
"get" it.  I also call my mom an absurd amount of times a day so I love that she does the same!

Stop back by on Monday to see another great gal, own it!  If you had fun reading Karly, Jenn and I own it, join in the fun next Thursday and the last Thursday of each month with your own post!  Own anything, big or little.  Share that "little thing you do."  Have a confession session.  Things from the past week/month or just in general.

Happy Friday and Happy Weekend!

Own It: Featuring Jenn from Going the Distance

Today's the day.  Our long-weekend trip to Bermuda is here! AND it's rumored that Princess Kate went into Labor last night (BUT it could always just be a rumor.. don't want to spread lies here, ha!) Anyways, I'm hoping she can hold off until we get there - Bermuda is a british territory so I know those people will be celebrating!
You can follow along on instagram to follow along until I'm back.

I haven't forgotten about things around here though, Like I mentioned last week, I've got some friends filling in while I'm gone.  I owned it last week and today Jenn is here to own it too.  Jenn is sweet as can be and always has the nicest things to say.  She was one of my first friends when I started blogging and if we lived in the same place I know we'd spend lots of time chatting over a bottle of wine.

Hi, lovies!! I'm Jenn and I blog over at Going the Distance!
Your regular blog host, the super sweet Christina (or Tina Mouse as I recently learned is one of her nicknames hehe), asked me to come and guest post for her!

She recently did a post about owning it--talking about the little quirks and things that make you YOU! She asked me to do my own post about owning it so here goes!

I'm a horrible swimmer
I used to say that I can't swim, but that's not really true. I know how--I just kinda panic in water that I can't reach the bottom of. Or I get really tired. Or I get really tired because I'm busy panicking lol. I wish I was a water baby, but it's just not my most comfortable environment.

Sometimes I count the number of letters in a word to see if there's an even number or not.
I'm not even sure why I do this anymore. I remember doing it in elementary school and sometimes I catch myself doing it now. Usually it's been when I'm in a meeting and I'm bored.

I have an addiction. To Chapstick.
{via}
As hard as I try to break my addiction, I cant. I have them in all areas of my life (my desk at work, my work bag, the night stand, my purse(s), etc.) And if I realize I don't have some form of lip product with me, and wont have access to it, I kinda panic.

I hate emptying the dishwasher.
{via}
I don't mind loading it (and you know I already have a method for all of that--one that I'm pretty sure MG has yet to pick up on-- lol) but I really hate putting the dishes away. Same with folding laundry. I'm totally the person who puts it on 4 cycles in the dryer because I dont want to fold them (luckily MG is a good motivator and a good folder)

I don't like driving.
I'll do it--I do it every day, but given the opportunity to drive or ride along as a passenger, I will choose  passenger every single time. Especially in our area where drivers are either primarily idiots, or super aggressive, it just stresses me out.

A perfect, relaxing day to me is sitting outside and reading for hours on end.
Hence why I was able to rip through 4 books when we were on vacation for a week. I love to read and I wish I had more time to do it during the work week.

My husband and I have been known to be goofballs in the car.
{via}

And they are some of my favorite moments. Whether it's on our way to run errands or on a road trip, MG and I know how to make dull stuff more fun (just the other weekend we were singing an 80s song and taking turns singing the male and female parts lol). We've always said that we knew we were an especially good fit when we could make boring stuff like errands, more fun. And I think that's the key to a really happy relationship--finding joy in the every day stuff.

One of my biggest pet peeves is people pretending to be something that they aren't.
{via}
(I copied this one from you, Christina)
It's SO true. Throughout life you meet people and sometimes they're genuine and kind and other times they surprise the heck out of you with the about-face that they do. Like the person who professes to anyone who will listen that she's the most loyal person to her friends, and then you find out she's talking about you behind your back.  Just be who you are, and let others be who they are, without judgement. Why can't people just be nice and supportive of one another instead of destructive? People like that drive me nuts.

I'll leave you with this quote, which I think sums up the whole topic of owning it:

{via}

I want to give a special thanks to Christina for letting me take over her space for the day! Hope to see you guys around my part of the blog world sometime, too!

A huge thanks to Jenn for keeping the blog afloat today while I'm away.  Another reason the own it posts are so much fun is because you tend to see people are just like you with their quirks.
I'm so with you lady, I HATE driving - I'd rather ride along any day then be the driver.  Amen to finding the joy in everyday stuff in a relationship - that's when you know you've got something special!

Make sure to check back tomorrow to see another great gal, own it!
If you had fun reading Jenn and I both own it, join in the fun next Thursday and the last Thursday of each month with your own post!  Own anything, big or little.  Share that "little thing you do."  Have a confession session.  Things from the past week/month or just in general.
