Own It {July Linkup}

Welcome back for another Own It linkup. Own anything. Have a confession session. Share the little crazy things about you

{Marriage-ing}

I didn't live with my husband until we were married…
I will own this one from the rooftops because other than marrying Derek, this was probably my second best decision.  This past year has been such a blessing and I've already learned so much more about Derek and myself that I didn't even know before.
{I 100% know this choice isn't for everyone and have nothing against people who move in first - this just worked for us}.

I had an adjustment period…
I've mentioned before, but I'm not a big fan of change - good or bad - I like things how they are.  I left my parent's house as a "roommate" of theirs for the last time two days before my wedding and cried.  I cried when Derek and I ate our first meal in this house (sorry honey!) and I cried on occasion (we're talking like a two - five minute teary eyed cry) the first month after the honeymoon - I just had to adjust and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.  Luckily, God paired me with my match because he didn't think there was anything wrong with it either - he helped me settle in.
(Update - I get homesick every now and again and want to visit home - who doesn't!? But I've stopped the tears, ha!)

{Housewife-ing}

I air dry most of our clothes…
I can thank my mama for this (thanks mom!) She always air dryer the majority of our clothes.  Now I have to do the same.  I put clothes into the dryer to get the wrinkles out for about 20 minutes and take out dresses, t-shirts, shorts, etc.  to hang and let the lesser items - workout clothes, underwear, pajamas, etc. to keep drying in the dryer.

I check to make sure my appliances are off.  Multiple times…
I probably check my straightener/curler is off at least 3-5 times before leaving the house.  Many times I end up taking a photo to "remind" myself that it's in fact off.  I wait in the driveway to make sure the garage door is down and usually continue watching in my rearview mirror as I drive away (ha, because it *might* just pop back up*).  Before leaving the house for travel or something like that I check the doors probably twice each as well as the stove/oven and sometimes theres even photos of those :)
*If Stella is being left in the house then I'm even MORE crazy about my weird routine…

{Travel-ing}

I can't take the first magazine in the stack.  Ever…
I thought of this one when we were stuck at the airport with a cancelled flight flying to Boston but I never can grab the first magazine in the stack.  US Weekly, Life & Style, Travel & Leisure, Redbook - any of them! I prefer a nice crisp magazine for myself and have been doing this for years.

Fruit mentos before flight…
I don't quite know how this one started but I always need to get a pack of the fruity mentor at the airport before a flight.  I shouldn't say always - I don't do it every single time anymore but the majority of the time I still do.  I don't know why but it's one of my only superstitions.

{Life-ing}

Everything has to be organized…
Can you even tell just from this post?  To do lists, packing stacks, emails - everything needs to be nicely in order and organized - it's just how I need to have it.  There even needed to be the same amount of points under each category today - I had to.

I take way too many pictures…
But without pictures the memory fades away so it's okay - right?? I love having these little pieces of some of my favorite memories to instantly bring me back to those moments.

Ok, your turn! Linkup below.  If you missed out today, the linkup runs through Saturday so join in
or come back the last Thursday (8/27) of next month!

  1. I'm glad that not living together before marriage worked for you guys, and I support that choice. Like you said, everyone is different, and as long as it works for you, then who cares what everyone else is doing?
I prefer a crisp magazine to a crinkled, super man-handled one too.
And I can relate to the too many pictures! I need to clean out my phone/camera soon!

  2. I totally check appliances to make sure their off too!! Just one of our things I guess! I wish we had the space to air dry our clothes - one day I will! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  3. I always get fruit mentos before flights too! But then sometimes I get hungry and eat them all at once and that, my friend, is a tummy ache.

  4. Oh man, I could totally do a post of all the superstitious-OCD-type things I do too! Writing that one down. After reading your list I have a few more I need to consider :) I'm so sad I missed this link up again!!

  5. I am totally with you on hating change! Even going home and seeing family for two weeks, I come back and am homesick and feel like crying every morning! It's ridiculous! I also have to make sure all of my hair stuff is unplugged and the stove is off before I leave, we get paranoid and it's okay!:)

  6. Haha, you take pictures of things too before you leave the house?? It's so bad when I leave for the weekend! Gotta have pictures of everything to make sure it's turned off... I've been known to turn the car around in the neighborhood to check :)

  7. I TOTALLY forgot about the Owning It Link up! {snap!} Darn it!

  8. Yay for no more tears! And I really would love to start air drying our clothes, especially since they can hang outside year round. And I too am guilty of taking too many pictures, but then everyone's always so thankful I have pictures of all the events ;-)

  9. Girl, I'm with you, but we've already talked about not living together before marriage. So glad everything worked out [for both of us, haha]. I also take too many pictures and I never realized it, but I don't take the first magazine either, haha.

  10. We have lots in common! I had that adjustment period, too, and there were lots of tears shed on my part! I always take at least the 3rd magazine in the rack because I like a new magazine and don't want any crinkly pages. And I am very organized!!! Loved this and was glad I was able to participate!

  11. I didn't realize we had so many things in common! I hate change too and cried when I got rid of my first car for my new one. Cried on our way to our honeymoon (I think that was going stir crazy from the 12 hour flight though) and cried when we moved out of our old place. Change is hard! And I check the appliances to make sure they're off multiple times too. I've actually left the house and gone back to double check before!

  12. I'm impressed with your air dry skills! I had to do this when I lived in Italy and my clothes were always stiff as boards... and smelled like the Turkish restaurant downstairs, lol... Not exactly the fresh scent I imagined when I see clothes drying!

  13. Everything must be organized all the time!! Yes! Also, I love that you guys didn't live together before you got married. I feel like you and I have a lot of the same beliefs.

  14. That shirt in the first picture is amazing! I saw some wine glasses on etsy like that and will be getting one after the wedding. Side note...I also air dry almost everything. It keeps the clothes in better shape :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. I wish I'd be better about air drying since it keeps your clothes is such better condition! And I am right there with you on not taking the first magazine - never, ever! It always has to be a fresh one from the back, haha!

  16. I didn't move in with my hubby before our wedding either and am also 100% happy with that choice. And like you, I cried a little - even at 32 years old, it was a HUGE adjustment! (Mind you I lived with my mom for 3 years right after my dad suddenly passed away so that was another thing...)
I also check appliances etc 3/4 times before leaving...lol too funny - glad I'm not alone!
And I too don't take the first magazine, it's usually all flippy and the perfumes are open!
You and I would get along girl! Hahah .... love this!

  17. Gosh I have a TON of photos too! Crazy how many I have but I LOVE them all! I also have to have a fresh magazine! Kudos to you for not living with your hubby before you guys got married.

  18. I hate change, too! I still get homesick/teary-eyed sometimes. I just can't help it! Totally with you on a nice crisp magazine...and I love everything being organized. I don't always manage to keep things that way, but I sure try! I need to remember about taking a picture on my straightener...that is SO smart!

    ReplyDelete
  19. This made me laugh, because I have a lot of the same quirks. Totally with you on the whole magazine thing. Who wants one that everybody has already touched. Eww! And the straightener... ugh! I will seriously walk through my house 2-3 times to check that I really did unplug it and that my mind wasn't playing tricks on me.

  20. Brandon and I didn't live together before we got married, either, and it was a great decision for us, too! :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Everything has to be organised for me too girl, I love structure & lists :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I check everything like a crazy person too! LOL I just want to make sure everything is off, unplugged and locked. I am with you 110% on taking pictures of everything!! I want all the memories I make and proof of them for later on. Love this!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I am totally OCD about checking appliances before we leave home, lol! I've even turned the car around and gone back when I thought I left something on!:)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I air dry most of my clothes, I check my appliances all the time, I moved in with my boyfriend over a year ago and I still get home sick and I live 8 minutes from my dad's house and go there every Sunday for dinner. After living there for basically my whole life it was hard to just not....I still refer to it as home. I'm working on that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm so glad that worked out for y'all, I'm glad Kyle and I live together before marriage, he needed to know what he was getting into prior to marriage haha.

We do a lot of airdrying too. I airdry all of my dresses.

  26. We didn't live together until after we were married and it was definitely the right decision! It allowed that time to be so special just getting settled in and finally getting to live in the same house together after the honeymoon! Glad to hear I'm not the only one OCD about her appliances and leaving the house :)

  27. I love that magazine one. I also like things new and squeaky clean. No folded corners for this girl!

  28. Girl, Ryan and I have been living together since 2011 and have been married two years - I still get homesick from time to time. Don't feel bad. :) You're lucky you have a guy that understands! I'm with you on the OCD about checking the house before leaving for travel, and I always wait for the garage door to go down! At our last house (rental), it always popped up and there were times we were gone for hours with the door wide upon (unknown to us). Now, I never take that chance anymore!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Chris and I didn't live together until we were married either, we didn't even live in the same city until we were married! We are a very independent couple, which is so weird to other people but it works for us. We always know where we'll end up at the end of the day! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Love this! Adam and I didn't live together before marriage either, and I 100% love that we did it this way! I also am SUPER paranoid and obsessive about leaving my straight iron/oven/whatever else on and check 2-3 times before I leave! We've actually left the house and been almost halfway to our destination and had to drive all the way back because I couldn't remember if I had unplugged it, so your picture idea is pretty much genius!

    ReplyDelete
  31. We have so much in common! I love that you and Derek didn't live together before you got married. I always check to make sure everything is off before we leave for vacation. Who wants a wrinkled magazine anyway?! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. There's definitely nothing wrong with taking lots of pictures because I'm firm believer that you probably will forget if you don't take pictures. My husband has his own little traditions that he has to do when he gets on a plane to travel. He always touches the side of the plane and then has to text me to let me know that he's on the plane. Sometimes it helps to have those little traditions.

  33. Aw I love this post! I am so with you in owning that we never lived together before we got married. It was such a great decision to do that and made getting married more special and fun :) I do always get sad when I leave my family after a fun trip or big holiday - I have to try really hard to hold it together at the airport lol

    ReplyDelete
  34. You are so a younger version of me! First, moving in, homesick, still cries - my daughter since her wedding-it will be two years in October. I check the doors, the appliances, everything before I leave, before bed and numerous times before a trip - you are not alone and I can't wait to share with my family that there are others out there doing the same exact thing. They think I'm nuts. I call it being reassured all my ducks are in order. The organization - take a look at my blog. I spend more time editing than I do anything just to be sure every i is dotted and every space is where it should be. Not living with your husband before marriage - PERFECT! A Godly example for the young women of today - it can be done! Loved getting to know you a little more.

  35. I am always homesick for Chicago and my family and friends back home. It's always so nice to go back and see everyone and wake up in my childhood bedroom.

I cry every time I leave home (I'm a daddy's girl for sure!) and this last trip was the first time I didn't cry. I'm a crier though so I totally relate! haha

  36. Good for you for checking the appliances. I always leave the house thinking… did I turn off my curling iron?!? And I'm the same way about magazines and even groceries, I always grab from behind haha

    ReplyDelete
  37. Love the shirt! I'm the same way with change, even small things! I'm always having to think about whether or not I unplugged my curler haha.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ohhh gosh yes the adjustment period!! I have a week or two of adjustment every time we move... my poor husband lol!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ah I love this link up! Can't wait for next month. Due to circumstances, my husband and I had to live together before we got married and while I wanted to wait I am AWFUL at change so it did make things easier for that process. I also get very home sick [more like mama sick!].

    ReplyDelete
  40. Love this!! I do the same with magazines and books!! Great link-up!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I have never been as relieved as I am now to know I am not the only person who takes a photo of their hair straightener/toaster oven before they leave the house. This #owningit has totally made my day girl! Yes, amen, yes, to owning that crazy because I am with you!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I am so glad I am not the only one who has to check if my appliances are over at least 3 times, I even message my mum if she is home to check for me if I have left the house! I need an adjustment period to things too, I hate change. Change scares me whether that change is good or bad. Change is foreign to me and I need time to get used to it.

  43. I air dry most of my clothes too! Michael's I'm not concerned about really (sorry, Michael!) but yeah, most of my clothes get air dried. I also wash a lot of my clothes on delicate/in cold water even if they don't really need it because I'm just paranoid they'll get ruined. Hahaha. I never thought of that as something to own but it totally is for me. Might have to use that next month. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. SO smart to take pictures of your appliances! I might start doing this too because I can never remember if I turned off my curling iron or not.
I also didn't live with my husband until we got married and I love that! Our wedding truly signified the start of a new life together.

  45. My first visit by your blog and certainly not my last. What a cute meme! I am way older than you but I saw myself in so, so many of these. I'm organized to a fault, always have been, always will be and I live with a camera in my hand.Happy weekend!

  46. I'm crazy about checking appliances too! I thought I was the only one, glad to know I'm not alone. My husband and I lived together for one year before we got married but I think it's awesome that you waited. We did it for financial reasons we were both paying so much $$$ in rent it made sense to live together and save. I'm also crazy about air drying too

    ReplyDelete
  47. Oh my gosh I totally do the garage thing!! And if I forget to wait i have to circle the block to double check. We have issues :) Thanks for hosting this link up! Love it!!

  48. Not living together worked for us too! I love your fruit mentos before a flight tradition! :)

  49. i love the idea of taking a pic of turned off appliances--really handy!!

  50. We lived together when we got engaged. I wouldn't have moved in with someone who I was just dating. To each their own, but I feel like living with a regular boyfriend/girlfriend takes away from the special-ness of living with your spouse or spouse-to-be.
I take the second or third product from the shelves at stores.

  51. I air dry most of my clothes too! I'm always afraid the are going to shrink. I do the same this to get the wrinkles out. I put the dryer on 'dewrinkle' which is a 10 minute cycle and add a damp wash cloth. Works like a charm!
