Casear Salad - Classic & Just a Bite + Sponsor Spotlight

Happy Tuesday, everyone - one day closer to that holiday weekend.  Today I'm sharing a favorite in this house.  A simple and regular Caesar salad is probably both mine and Derek's favorite salad - I mean, it's classic!

Caesar Salad - Just a Bite:
I can't even remember where I originally saw the idea to make these but anything bite size is a favorite of mine.  This will be a repeat appetizer for us I'm sure as the weather gets warmer and a staple at summer BBQ's.

Ingredients:
romaine lettuce
croutons
cooked chicken - cubes
parmesan cheese - cubes
caesar dressing
toothpicks

Directions:
Mix the caesar dressing in with the lettuce in a mixing bowl.  Put a lettuce wedge, chicken cube, parmesan cheese cube through a toothpick and then gently push it into the crouton.  You might have to push the first three ingredients down the toothpick a little to get them to stand right on the crouton (pushing the toothpick only halfway into it is the best way to not have it crack).

*You could also just drizzle the dressing over each bite once finished.

Classic Caesar Salad:
Derek and I usually cheat and just get the lettuce, croutons, fresh parmesan and sometimes grilled chicken and mix it all together with store bought dressing.  However, my step-dad makes the most amazing homemade salad (originally from Rachel Ray, I believe) so if we're having dinner at my parent's house or having them over, we will frequently request that they bring/make this.

Sorry for the terrible photo, it was hard digging through to find one!

Ingredients:
2 garlic cloves
4 anchovy fillets
1 hard-boiled egg yolk
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/3 teaspoon each salt and pepper

2 head romaine lettuce, torn
1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese
croutons

Directions:
Chop up the garlic clovers and anchovy fillets.  Add in the hard-boiled egg yolk, 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil, 3 tablespoons lemon juice, 1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon dry mustard and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper.  Mix until all blended smoothly.  Toss the lettuce in a large serving bowl with the dressing and parmesan cheese.

Loving This Week

Happy Friday, all! I'm looking forward to a nice weekend at home.  I'm also looking forward to the start of spring on Sunday which is also bringing us a possible snow - how is that possible?!

I love chunky necklaces but not usually that heavy.  I gave this mint one a try and it's the perfect mix (also available in teal / blush / grey).  In the same package - these cute tassel earrings.

Hot pink is one of my favorite colors for summer and I love how this color pops as an earring even with my dark hair (also available in teal here).  While on the note of pink - I love the style Tory Burch wallets and have been eying this pink one - 30% off right now at their website sale.  This tote might not be on sale but I love the color combos and a straw tote (or a couple) are key for the season and can  be used for so many occasions.

I've been loving the black/floral combo on many items (sharing another favorite next week) and a navy romper is a key closet item for me, I need a new one this season and this looks like the one.

I love heels, I'm short and they add a great something extra BUT I love heels that are comfortable and not too high.  These look to fit the part and come in so many colors (all here).  This pale pink Kate Spade sandal is too cute too pass up.  It's not available in stores yet but with easy returns I was willing to take a try on it (black / gold / mint / coral).

Other Happenings:
+ Tory Burch is having an online sale - up to 70% off through Monday.  You can shop here.  There are tons of things for sale (a few items that I have, love and wanted to share sold out before I could) but this pebbled wristlet, I love and it's perfect for an evening out or even bringing a few items to the pool.

+ Other sales this week... Many varieties of Ray Bans are 20% off (here).

+ Three hours is a little much for me (especially right after daylight savings time) but I love everything about The Bachelor finale - Lauren winning (perfect for Ben), JoJo as the Bachelorette (perfect for us).  This article was an interesting look at the finale wardrobe secrets.

+ Speaking of The Bachelor, I finished Emily Maynard's new book in a few days (quick for me) and was so hooked into her story... would definitely recommend.

+ Kelsey shared some great Easter inspiration this week (Bacon, ranch pasta salad - yes!) and Emily shared some fantastic book reviews (including Bread & Wine, which I've been dying to read) that anyone looking for a new read should check out!

Happy Weekend! Cheers!

Buffalo Chicken Meatballs + Sponsor Spotlight

When I was planning the menu for the Super Bowl, I so wanted to make buffalo chicken meatballs - we've never had them before!  The guys all had their hearts set on buffalo wings so I lost out.  Finally I had the chance to test them out when we had people over for appetizers a little while back.

The wait was worth it and they did not disappoint - so delicious!

Ingredients:
So we just kind of threw things into the crockpot as we went so this won't be too specific but I really don't think you can mess up!

one package ground chicken
3/4 cup bread crumbs
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
3/4 cup buffalo sauce (next time might just use 1/2)

We also added in a handful of brown sugar, a few squirts of soy sauce and then drizzled honey on top.  It was the perfect addition and we were happy with the trial.  We also served them with both ranch and blue cheese dressings.

Directions:
Combine the ground chicken, bread crumbs, egg, garlic powder and onion power in a bowl - using your hands is best but you could also use a spoon.  Once mixed, roll into little balls and place on a baking sheet.  Cook these in the oven at 400 degrees for about ten minutes and then gently place them all into the crockpot.  Now is when you'll add in the buffalo sauce and other seasonings.  Heat on low for two hours, serve with the dipping sauces and enjoy!

Friday's Feature: Spring Florals

I was very on board with the floral trend last summer (and every summer before that) but I was happy to see this year that it carried into the winter.  I'm even happier that it's time again for the pastel and bright floral patterns to grace the stores.  This style/season of clothing is much more my jam than winter things.

We're heading right into the season of spring holidays and brunches/dinners (Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day), wedding showers and rehearsal dinners, baby showers, and just any old excuse to dress up, right?  I took my nice long break from shopping post holidays because I really couldn't bare to look at the winter stock any longer but now I'd be lying if I didn't say I am craving the warm weather AND spring clothing.

Today I'm taking a look at some of my favorite floral pieces that are available now (and some may or may not be on the way to me!).  Most are under $100 and it might not be quite time for these items yet (unless you live more towards the south, and in that case - I'm jealous!) but these probably won't still be around come April/May…

top: one (Easter dress hopeful!) | two | three | four (looks so comfy!) | five (new as in new I placed a multi floral dress order the other day and this popped up as "NEW" the next day and went right into my cart - perfection! )
bottom: six | seven (great for a casual work day) | eight | nine (perfect for a bridal shower)

And I can't leave out the accessories...
necklace (the perfect touch to so many looks!) | clutch (splurge but how amazing are the colors!) sneakers | watch (would go with so many looks!) | bathing suit | flats | travel bag (I always give Derek my bag to hold in the airport and this roller has caught my eye!) phone case

Other Happenings:
+ Did anyone see Chrissy Teigen and John Legend's photo shoot with their pups to decorate the new baby's nursery?  I see this whole scene in my, Derek and Stella's future.  If I didn't love Chrissy before, love her even more now! (article here)

+ I'm sure everyone heard the news of Fuller House being back for a second season.  Despite the cheesiness (I mean the original was pretty cheesy too!) the show made me very nostalgic, I loved it and I'm excited that it's back for more - hoping that it's filming when we're out west this summer!

+ Emily did a really fun Disney tag recently (I know a lot of people have been to Disney recently, are going soon or just plain love Disney!) and Holly shared a delicious chicken, broccoli and ziti recipe - definitely adding this to our menu soon!

+ I did a Q & A series the week before last and am planning to do a part two.  If you have any questions for the gal behind this blog, share them below and I'll try to address them in that post!

Cheers to the weekend! Enjoy

Mr. & Mrs. and His & Hers + Sponsor Spotlight

First today, I'd like to wish my mom a very happy birthday! She's the biggest fan and supporter of this blog as well as all I do (and my best friend, shopping buddy and someone I occasionally wear matching outfits withand I love any chance we get to celebrate her!

With the day of love right around the corner and wedding season not too far off I thought it would be a good time to share something I've been meaning to for a while.  When Derek and I were engaged I wanted anything and everything Mr. & Mrs. and His & Hers.  It was such fun to use at that time and to this day I'm still a sucker for it.  These items make the best little addition to a wedding/engagement gift or even just a gift for a couple or a gift from husband to wife.

Mr. & Mrs.
The glasses (tall version) are used quite frequently around our house and we actually still have the Mr. & Mrs. towels on one of our towel rods in the master bath for decoration. Had the Mr. & Mrs. balloons of been out when we were getting married, I would have most definitely used them for something.
{left to right, top to bottoms} one | two | three | four | five | six seven

His & Hers
I love these items because they can be great for any couple.  I have a weak spot for cute  luggage tags as well as wine glasses (just check out our cabinets and you'll see).  I think the pillows would be a great addition to any home.

His and Hers for Valentine's Day
Originally we were going to lay off the Valentine's gifts since we're heading out of town shortly after the holiday but as things got closer and everyone was getting hyped up on the day, we changed our minds BUT kept things focused on spring, thinking ahead and possibly thinking pink to stay in theme instead of getting a gift just to get a gift.  It's the perfect chance to get a little something special you've been eyeing without going crazy.
The Miller Sandals are my go to for spring/summer and the "fun" colors go quick - Valentine's Day is the perfect time for the pink pair and why not consider a matching clutch?  Lilly Pulitzer wine glasses always make the perfect little gift (especially with newly released patterns) as does a DIY pedi system so you don't always have to go to the salon (and possibly have been eying for a while).

Valentine's Day shopping for a guy is always harder I feel but luckily mine isn't opposed to the bright colors AND picked up the Valentine's Day vineyard vines shirt himself at the mall while I was in a different section so I guess it's not too much.  These bathing suits Derek swears by and yes, they are all as bright as this one.  Any holiday is a good excuse for a Vineyard Vines shirt especially with a new season on the horizon.  Some reading material would be there perfect little gift for the upcoming trip or just because.

Sponsor Spotlight: A Little Bit of Emily
I'm also excited to share a new sponsor today, Emily from A Little Bit of Emily. She's shared some delicious recipes like mini quiches (my favorite!) and chocolate coated buttercreams - yum! You can find out a little bit more about her posting style here where she shared her top five reader picks.

Hey all!  My name is Emily Dunham.  I am a 28 year old living in the Midwest - the St. Louis area to be exact.  A few things to know about me - I absolutely love to read, getting lost in a good book, especially one with a happily ever after ending will always be one of my favorite past-times.  I am constantly on the look out for new recipes, as cooking is another one of my favorite things to do.  I am also an avid movie-goer.  Give me some movie theater popcorn, loaded with butter and salt, and a great movie and you will have one happy girl.  And of course, spending time with family ranks high on my list of favorites.  Since we are all spread out from each other, many of my weekends are spent traveling to get in that together time.  After being a blog reader for years, I decided to start my own.  You can find me over at a little bit of emily, where I share bits and pieces of my life from my favorite fashions, books, recipes and just some of my everyday.

Quick Facts…
Favorite food:  My all-time favorite food is my mom's spaghetti.  Growing up, she made her own sauce and it was (and still is) the best thing ever!  I now make it myself, and I always try to make sure to have some on hand for whenever I am craving spaghetti.
Place I want to travel:  Greece or Italy...gorgeous scenery and amazing food!  State-side, I would love to check out the East Coast.
Favorite cocktail:  Margarita, on the rocks, no salt
Favorite TV shows:  Way too many to count, but right now Madam Secretary and Modern Family.  Friday Night Lights will always be a favorite, too.
Favorite store:  Nordstrom or Loft
Favorite sports team:  I grew up loving the Chicago teams, but after living in St. Louis for a few years, I am slowly becoming a Cardinals fan.
Favorite holiday:  Thanksgiving.  I used to think Christmas, but I decided this year that Thanksgiving is my all-time favorite.  I love that Thanksgiving is all about family and good food.  It kicks off the start of the Christmas season, which is my favorite time of the year.

Yum, margaritas are a favorite of mine too - but with the salt and going to Greece?  Yes please! I hope everyone enjoyed getting to know a little bit about Emily and make sure to stop by her blog to say hello.

Friday's Feature {1/22}

Case App:
Have I ever mentioned I'm a sucker for something personalized?  Well, I am.  When the people at Case App reached out to me just before the holidays, the timing was perfect - we'd just taken our family photos for our Christmas cards so I wasted about two seconds decided what my case would look like AND they offered to throw in one for Derek for his Christmas stocking - perfect stocking stuffer!

I'm no good at technology but their site was super user friendly and I had both cases designed in a matter of minutes.  Like I said, I like personalized but you don't have to use a photo.  A quote, a graphic from the internet, a monogram (was my second choice!), etc. you can pick anything! I had Derek's design picked out almost as fast as my own.  I had just had fun the weekend before playing around with the panoramic options on my phone and had taken some cool shots of Beaver Stadium and knew that's what I wanted to use!

Another huge plus for me is that I still have an iPhone 5s and most of the designer and nicer cases that are sold right now are just for the iPhone 6 so it's a great option for any size phone.  I'm also not a fan of bulky cases so I love that it hugs right around the edge of the phone and is nice and slim.  (For reference, Derek's case is for a 6).  He was so impressed with the case in his stocking and actually never uses a case but said "Wow, I think I'll actually use this." Win!

Both cases turned out with nice clear imaged and I was so impressed with our new items.  You can also create laptop and iPad skins - the options are endless if you browse the site for a bit.

Now, Christmas is over but Valentine's Day is right around the corner and this could be the perfect accessory to include as part of your gift! You can scoop up one of your own for a 20% discount with the code "CHRISTINADEREK20."  The code will be valid until next Friday, 1/29.  You can find their website right here or check out their instagram @caseapp too.

Other Happenings:

Who is ready for this blizzard? I said last night you know you're growing up when your excited for a weekend snow.  We'll both be home with nowhere to go so bring on all the snow (if we would have had some like we usually do before now, I might not be saying the same!)  We were suppose to head out of town Saturday to see a friend but now that we're home with nothing to do - I'm ready for the snow party!  This graphic cracks me up…

+ Makeup brush cleaning.  I shouldn't share how long it's been since I've done so (the fact that I can't even remember what I used last time should say something) but definitely share if you have easy ways with items that can be found around home!

+ I was always hoping that the twins on The Bachelor would get the two-on-one date but didn't think it would actually happen.  Last night I saw the first (to my seeing) commercial with the fact that it is both of them on it.  Very interested to see how that will play out!

+ I'm sure I'm not the only one still obsessed with the pineapple trend even though it's winter and these earrings are too cute and now on sale!

+ If you missed yesterday's post, make sure to check out a new sponsor Sarah and get to know her a bit as well as check out her great giveaway!

If you're getting snow, enjoy it and stay warm! If you're not, enjoy your weekends out and about!

Makeup Routine Favorites + Sponsor Spotlight

Confession: I'm not a big makeup girl.  Well, let me rephrase that - I love wearing makeup and have my favorite few items but I'm not always searching the rows of Sephora and Ulta for the newest items.  Most of my products I've either had for years or gotten a recommendation for or copied my mom or one of my best friends.  I don't usually test out new things unless someone else likes them because they usually end up as a "miss." Before the holidays I got asked a lot about products I used and what my routine was so today, I'm sharing all my favorites.

During the weekdays, my makeup takes me probably five minutes or less.  On the weekends or when were going out it takes probably 15 minutes or less, probably even 10 or less.  If I knew what I was doing better, it would probably take more.  Wouldn't it be great to have a makeup artist???

My two keys are lipstick and blush.  I don't feel "made up" until I've got something on my lips and rosy cheeks.  To avoid this being too long I'll share storage, lips, eyes and shadows today saving bronzer, brushes and blush (and face) for next time (purely because I like how the three B's sound together).
Storage:
Like everyone, I fell in love with nice acrylic storage cases that the Kardashian girls use but would it be smart for someone who isn't even a makeup expert to spend $200+ on one case? No.  One of my best girls found a great alternative and I copied.  It's been about two years and I've never had a better or more organized storage setup.  I can't find my exact one any more but this storage set is just about the same, except mine has all the long rows.  I got similar matching items to hold my brushes as well as nail polishes.

There's plenty of other variations that you can get or items to go along with the setup like additional compartments to stack on, lipstick storage on top, or just a lipgloss case.

Lips:
Lipsticks the list could go on and on - this area is my absolute favorite but I am fully a YSL girl.  I have a couple other brands but it's only because I started using them before my YSL obsession and continue going back.

Most days I'm wearing YSL color 26 rose libertin and just recently I started adding Sephora brand rouge shine color 18 just dating on top. (one of the only things I just tried on a whim myself).  This has been my favorite for longer than I can remember whether for day or night, whatever time of the season, it never gets old.

During these cold winter months another combo I like is Sephora rouge shine color 13 forever yours with YSL color 09 rose stiletto over it.  Another big favorite, but only for summer (well, usually - sometimes nights out too) YSL color 19 fuchsia - if you're looking for a hot pink that will really pop, this is your color.

If I'm going for a lipgloss I love the simple nyx butter gloss (I'm not huge on lipgloss, for me I can just "feel" that it's on my lips and can't deal) but my absolute favorite is eclair - it just has such a nice, simple and feminine look. (Tiramisu is a close second - has anyone ever just read the names? They are the best!)

Eyes:
For liners I go simple and swear by CoverGirl perfect point eyeliner (expresso or black onyx) for the bottom and Physicians Formula eye booster 2-in-1 lash boosting eyeliner and serum on the top (in any of the three colors, depending on the day).  The Physicians Formula liner goes on so smoothly for a liquid. I've been using these two for years and years.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right??

If I use a primer (which is rare - only if it's something special) my go to is Urban Decay primer potion.

I've tried my fair share of mascaras to find one that really pops and so far my favorite is Benefit They're Real but I'm still on the look because while it's good on, it does take work to get off. (Once I didn't realize there was more than one They're Real product and accidentally grabbed the push up liner and walked out - I was back the next day to exchange).  I don't always do my brows but when I do I use Benefit brow zings shaping kit.

Lastly, I love this Tarte curler.  This is another one where I've used it for years and am just hooked.  Plus it always comes with a mini mascara to try and I like that too.

Shadows:
Again, as simple and basic as it gets - the original Naked palette is my go to.  I have the second and third palettes and have probably used them only a handful of times.  The neutrals in the original are my favorite and out of the palette there's about 4-6 colors that you can see the bottom which are clearly my favorite each day.  Recently I've also been loving two of the Nyx three shadow palettes - most of the colors for each of these is pretty similar but I love them for traveling because they are compact and easy to pack.

That's it today on the makeup front.  Do you have any favorites I should try because like I said, I usually only go on recommendations??? Next time… bronzers, brushes and blushes (and face care).

Sponsor Spotlight: Meet the Shaneyfelts
In addition to talking makeup today I'm excited to share with you a new sponsor, Sarah from Meet the Shaneyfelts.  She got married just under two months before me and did the same whole build a house thing with her new husband as I did so it's fun to follow along.  She shares some great recipes (hello green chile chicken tacos!), shared the process of building her house similar to the process we went through (she's got the best hardwood floors!), and has a Sense of Sarah series where you can get to know a little bit more about her.  She's also got a great giveaway below - don't miss out!
