Tatum Beau: One Month

Weekend posts are rare but with all of Tatum's milestones and the holidays, it's hard to squeeze things in!

On Thursday our little guy was a month old! This was the fastest, best yet hardest, most rewarding month of our lives.  It feels like yesterday he was born but at the same time it feels like it's been forever - I almost can't remember life without him!

Height/Weight:
As of Thursday he was 9 pounds 14 ounces and 22 inches long.  He was born at 7 pounds 10 ounces and by his first appointment he was back up to 7 pounds 8 ounces after loosing a little bit leaving the hospital and at two weeks he was 8 pounds.  He was 19 inches at birth and the same length at his appointments.

Clothes:
He's been in newborn clothes the whole first month - longer than I thought.  Two days ago we just started into a few 0-3 months while some of his bigger newborn outfits still have plenty of room too.  At about 3 weeks he upgraded to size 1 diapers, they were a little big but are fitting better now.

Feedings:
Right now he usually eats between 3/5-4 ounces at each feeding and thats recent within the past week. He's pretty good about making it exactly to about three hours from feeding to feeding - sometimes he gets a little fussy and we just feed at two hours but it's rare and usually only during the evening.  If he's enjoying a nice nap (especially in his car seat) he can make it about 4-4 1/2 hours between.  We are bottle feeding and mom/dad/baby are all happy, healthy and doing well with it.  We've tried a few bottles out but so far he still prefers the slow flowing nipples and the medela bottles.

Within his first week he'd take about 1.5-2 ounces per feeding and then he slowly would take more and more until we settled out at 3-3.5 ounces for most of the month.

Sleep:
He's doing pretty good! He usually goes with his feeding schedule and sleeps at 3 hour increments - rarely less and every once in a while gets a four hour stretch.  We usually feed around midnight, 3am and 6 am.  Depending what time we get that late night feeding in depends on the rest of the day (last week he went around 12:45, 4am and then slept until almost 8am)!

He always falls right back to sleep after his early morning feed - after we cuddle and watch GMA that's my time to get "all the things done."  Throughout the day he's pretty good about doing the whole eat, awake, back to sleep thing.  In the evenings it's iffy if he'll always nap.  During late night and overnight feedings he always falls right back to sleep.  We always make sure to diaper change before feeding (even if he's fussy) so then he can be cozy and sleep after.

Crying:
For the most part he only cries if somethings wrong - hungry, change of diaper, getting his nose drops, when we file his nails, wants to be held, etc.  He's no exception to the "witching hour" but it depends on his mood - some nights he's an angel and some he won't stop crying.  Usually on cue he'll cry right as we get our dinner together to eat.

Likes:
He loves stretching! Just in the past week or so he's gotten really good about eye contact and looking at things.  He loves his sister - doesn't mind her sniffing all over him.  He loves swinging on "fast speed" in his swing and kicking around in his dock a tot.  Being held and cuddled is of course his favorite.

Dislikes:
Being hungry, cold, the start of his baths... not much else.

Milestones:
His first few baths - he loves bath time! We've done a few family walks and he loves riding along. He's primarily only done tummy time laying on our chests but he likes that too and is pretty good at it - the doctor said he had good neck strength from the start! He did great at both his doctor's appointments.

We celebrated his first holiday - Halloween and also celebrated Daddy's birthday.  Lovie and Poppy babysat for the first time (and a few times after!) and he's always great for them.  He went to his first birthday party and had his first playdate... which he slept through but mom and dad enjoyed the adult part of the playdate.

Mommy changed his first diaper in a public  bathroom and it was a complete disaster - the worst change to date, an outfit in the trash, poop all over both of us and some tears from one of us - hint, not him!

Adventures:

We haven't gone out too much - Tatum has ridden along in the car while either mom or dad runs in for an errand and the other stays in the car.  We made it out to two dinners - one with family and one with friends.  Lunches were a little easier and with did about four of those.  He made his first visit to the office and a few doctor's appointments.  He made one trip quick trip into Target and another stroll around the mall for some Christmas browsing.

With the holidays coming up we have no choice but to run some errands to be ready! Plus, we'd go crazy just sitting inside so we try to get out a couple times a week.

Newborn Photos

Now that we've mailed out Tatum's birth announcements, I'm excited to share his newborn photos!  I tried to make getting the announcements done a priority so they didn't blend into Christmas card season - I think I got them out just in time.

We used a local photographer and she did the best job - I was overjoyed when Stella was even able to be included in a few shots too...

First Month Favorites

Tomorrow will have been a whole month with our little guy.  We've certainly figured out some favorite items, and just a few non favorites...

Tatum pretty much likes all his "seats" - his swing, rock n play sleeperdock a tot - he's pretty happy wherever we put him down which is awesome.  When he first got home from the hospital he'd only take the soothie paci   then started loving the wubbanub. He loves any little blanket to be swaddled on him during the day time if he's being fussy and has done well in the halo fleece sleep sack at night (we'd bought a few brands to see what he likes best).

The bassinest might be big but it's amazing - our bed is high so it reaches right up to us easily. He loves the vibration and sound features to fall asleep too.  A bonus is the dock a tot fits right into it - I feel like he's more secure with that - he looked so little in just the bassinet by himself.  The rock n play sleeper is great for napping - he can sit right next to me at my desk and sleep for a bit but not as long as the other two items.

These little washcloths  we've been using to cover him up during changing so we don't get peed on and they work great plus they are inexpensive.  The medela bottles have been working the best for us with slow flow nipples.  We usually just warm them up in a coffee mug with hot water.  The nuna car seat is amazing because it's light and can connect right onto the stroller.  He can sleep for hours in there.  The car seat cover is wonderful since... germ season.

He loves this sound app on my phone - at night we use the white noise (we haven't used the sound machine yet - just this as he's settling down then nothing) and during the day we use different sounds and it usually calms him right down.  The owlet monitor is a bit pricey but it's great for comfort at night.  With it monitoring his oxygen/heart rate I feel more comfortable sleeping at night knowing if something was wrong that the base next to me would sound.

Things we didn't really need were the little hand mittens, bibs and bodysuits - we didn't want to pull much over his head.  We could have used more of (and quickly made an errand for) hats, thicker blankets (to cover him in his stroller to stay warm), wash cloths, zip onesies, wubbanb.

Tatum's Birth Story

Where to begin! I always "knew" Tatum would be early - I just had a feeling.  The night before I went into labor I thought maybe that was it or it was just wishful thinking - I wasn't sure.  On Saturday 10/14, we'd walked to the fall festival in our neighborhood and done a lot of walking/standing/etc. - I was pooped by the time we got home BUT we'd been trying to do a weekend date night the past few weekends and I was always too tired and would pass it up so I got myself ready and off to dinner we went.

I mostly had back labor so I felt my first pains as we got to dinner and thought to myself "maybe tonight is the night!" - I nervously ate my way through dinner to get home and relax - I skipped the seafood I'd been hoping for and we split a pizza instead.

Around 3am I woke up with some more back pains and just started timing them to see - about 12-15 minutes apart and totally tolerable.  An hour later I quietly went downstairs to walk around, grab and ice pack and head back up to lay down.  Another hour later around 5am I decided to jump in the shower "just in case" - my biggest thing was I wanted a shower before going to the hospital so I figured if I showered and it was time to go, I'd be ready and if not then it was out of the way for the day.  I hadn't woken Derek up yet but he said later he heard me turn the shower on and new the baby coming that day!

Sweet Stella new exactly what was going on - she was cuddled right up next to me, more so than usual, when I left the room I'd see her eyes watching for me to come back - my little labor nurse.  I laid back down after the shower and around 9am decided to get up, walk around and see what that did - I was much more comfortable being up and mobile - not that I was in too much pain anyway.  Since my labor started very slowly and fairly painlessly I had lots of time to prepare - I washed our towels, finished packing our hospital bags, tidied up anything I could.  I'd been up for hours so I was pretty tired and headed for the couch - I was in and out of sleep as the back labor would wake me up every 8 minutes or so at this point - still not terrible pain.  A couple hours later I finally got up to go to the bathroom and felt a little weird - I realized that my water had broken (With how rare they say that is - I never thought it would happen to me!) - it wasn't fully broken so not too bad of an experience.

Derek was out watching football so I texted him, called the doctor and while my contractions were about 4-6 minutes apart the pain wasn't that bad - if anything after the water broke it was better.  The doctor said to stay home a bit more and they'd definitely pick up so we ate lunch, brought our bags down, loved on Stella and around 4pm even though they weren't that much stronger we decided to take off for the hospital just to see what was up.  I didn't tell anyone we were going because part of me thought we were for sure going to be sent home.

I was able to comfortably walk into the labor and delivery wing prompting the nurse to ask if I was visiting someone and I nervously said no I think I'm here to have a baby - after that I thought for sure I was going home and felt so stupid! After a little bit of waiting I was officially admitted around 5:30 and I'll never forget the doctor's look of shock when she said good thing you came in - you're dilated 6 centimeters, 100% effaced and the baby is low and ready.  They also received the test results back that my water did in fact break. At that point everyone kind of stopped what they were doing - the nurse stopped my admission work (which wasn't finished until sometime overnight) to start my iv and bloodwork, Derek ran to call my mom to tell her to hurry to pickup Stella so they could get to the hospital in time and I just walked around and texted some friends and family the big news that the baby was on the way!  For a few hours it was a toss up whether he'd be born on the 15th or the 16th.

I still wasn't overly in pain, it was easier for me to sit at the edge of the bed or walk around - I'd always figured I'd get the epidural as soon as I got there to prevent any pain but I was doing fine so I kept waiting since they said within about 15 minutes it could be given since things were quiet - it was a Sunday night after all (honestly, I always thought I'd get it around 4 centimeters, ha!) but the anesthesiologist got a sudden call that she'd be away for an hour or two so we all agreed better now than later so about 7:30 I nervously got it and luckily could still somewhat feel my legs and such. The nurse rotated me side to side and on my back every bit or so and by 11pm I was 8 centimeters.

I didn't want the baby to come before midnight (but would have happily welcomed him early!) - I love even numbers and would have preferred the 16th but really I didn't want our two night stay to start with one night being the recovery and the nurses agreed - but the baby wasn't ready anyway.

Even though I'd barely slept the night before and didn't sleep this night at all, I preferred that it was overnight - it was a peaceful and calm setting, the floor was quiet and while I didn't have a birth plan at all - if I could have picked one, it would have been exactly as things unfolded.  We loved our two labor and delivery nurses from the second we walked in, the vibe in the room was relaxed, joking, laughs and fun.  We were able to even get two naps in for about an hour or so each.  By a little after 1am I was finally to 9 centimeters - getting so close! I was so happy to be able to sip on some icy water and enjoy a popsicle.

I could feel the epidural wearing off a little bit so they topped it off twice before pushing began.  By 4am I was 10 centimeters and ready to go.  When all was said and done I pushed for just under an hour until our little boy was born at 5:27am - Tatum let out cries right away and we couldn't believe he was here!

I couldn't be more thankful for the positive experience and how everything unfolded.  I'm so glad that he was early and it was a "surprise" of when to go to the hospital.

We spent about an hour enjoying him ourselves and letting him get cleaned up, weighed, footprinted, etc. before my parents came back to meet him - I was so excited to see them as grandparents and just see them in general!  About an hour later we moved up to the maternity floor and after we got settled Derek walked to wawa to grab us hoagies as I was starving.

After a quick nap we spent the rest of the day fighting over who would hold him and getting settled in.

The rest of our hospital stay...

Monday night we had a nice visit with family and some friends and the rest was a blur - I was so exhausted.

Even with little sleep, on Tuesday we felt so refreshed! I think we barely put Tatum down the whole day, the photographer came in for newborn pictures, he had a few appointments, we had a few more visitors and also some downtime.

We were getting sick of our room so for our last dinner we wheeled Tatum out to the lounge, which was right next to our room, and enjoyed our meal out there.

By Wednesday morning we were a mix of sad to leave the comfort of the hospital but eager to get home.  We spent the morning getting our stuff together, getting all the discharge information and then changing Tatum from his hospital clothes into his going home clothes, packed him up in the car seat and headed home to start our new life as a family of four (including Stella, of course!)
