Penn State vs Army {Week Five}

Well, this was our last trip up to Happy Valley until next month - we have to miss the next two games but at least we have our second annual tailgate party here at casa de sotherden coming up soon.  I think this weekend was most definitely the most wet college game day in quite a while.  The weather was a huge topic and at Penn State it was no different - rain, rain rain.  Luckily at kickoff we were spared with just a drizzle but we battled rain throughout the game and our usual game day tailgate was moved to the basement because it was pouring during the morning.

We had quite the crowd of extra family and a bunch of friends in State College for the game against Army.  The Nittany Lions seemed to take the game a little lighter than they should have but we still pulled out a win - 20 to 14 and advancing to 4-1.

The rain didn't stop the game day spirit, we set up the tailgate right away in the basement until right up to game time.  The basement is already set up very "Penn State" like so it as the perfect spot (well perfect would have been down at the stadium in nice fall weather, so second perfect) to start the day.  Two of our family friends were in town so we had a solid group for the backup tailgate.

Kickoff was at noon so it was more of a breakfast tailgate with a few snacks this week…

Tailgate dip
deviled eggs
shrimp
cheese/crackers platter

monkey bread
quiches
munchkin donuts
fruit
muffins

bloody mary & mimosa bar

Steve brought out a box of "swishy" pants - after the first game was so rainy, he ordered swishy pants to have on hand for the amount of game tickets we have as well as more substantial ponchos.  Needless to say, the game was chilly and wet but in the rain gear we stayed pretty dry underneath!   How cute that they have a little logo at the bottom?? I had to snap a photo since mine were of course a tad to long and needed to be rolled.

Derek and I in our matching "swishy" pants ready to head down to the stadium and our little cheerleader ready to cheer from home.

Mom opted to sit this one out and watch with the dogs (the 3rd of 4 home games involving rain - who could blame her??) so we snapped our traditional tailgate photo before the rest of us bundled up in our rain gear and headed down to Beaver Stadium.

Swishy pants, raincoats, hats, ponchos, a pre game beer - we had it all in efforts to stay as dry and cozy as possible.  Rocking my game day look as well as possible.

Derek and I joined some of our oldest friends downtown for post game win celebrations, a few drinks and lots of quality time before heading home for a family football night in the basement.

Our "post" tailgate in the basement as we settled in for some more rain and some more football.  In addition to my parents and brother, my aunt and cousin were in town to join us for apps, drinks, pizza and the Saturday night games.

Up on the menu…
chips and guac, pico de gallo and a new hot sausage dip (sausage, cream cheese & rotel)
left overs from the morning - shrimp cocktail, deviled eggs, cheese/cracker platter, tailgate dip

pizza for the main course
peanut Butter Cupcake Cookies

If Nash's body positioning doesn't say "please drop a food scrap" than I don't know what does!  Stella was too interested in her Penn State football than sneaking some scraps.

Next up… Indiana

Last but not least… When Amanda &  Lindsay asked me to co-host Wino Wednesday with them this week - I mean there are few things I love more than wine (my husband, family, friends, Stella and Penn State football only might rank higher).  Their monthly linkup for October will be this Wednesday - 10/7 so be sure to join me and them - linkup and share your favorite wine! (or cocktail!)

Linking up with Biana & Meghan this lovely Monday.

  15. That is dedication to sit in the rain and watch a game. You all totally know how to tailgate! I love it. It makes me wish I watched football and rooted for a team. I cannot root for the New England Patriots, in anyway, shape or form. I use to have to deal with the team owner and well, he just wasn't very nice to me.

  18. Your Saturday looks a ton like our Saturday... super soggy!! I wore a poncho and my Hunter boots so the only thing that got wet was just a tiny bit of my leggings that the rain boots nor the poncho covered. It worked out pretty great! Glad you guys had fun despite the weather!

  24. You guys are such troopers watching the game in that weather! Looks like a lot of bloggers made it out to college football in the rain this weekend. I have to admit that I watched from home, but our team plays 11 hours away so that just wasn't in the cards anyway.
